On a quiet street just a few kilometers from Jaipur’s bustling walled old town lies a newly opened guesthouse in Jaipur, where a simple gate conceals soulful architecture waiting to be discovered. This family home with a boutique guesthouse on the first floor welcomes visitors with a striking sight of undulating forms – a facade adorned with five majestic catenary arches, some of which are 18 feet tall, inviting you to explore the treasures within.
The story of Rajan House is deeply rooted in its history as a multi-generational home, dating back to the 1950s when Kushagra Nigam’s grandfather bought land for his sons. Over the decades, this treasured property was lovingly passed down and evolved into a charming family home built in the early 1990s. In 2022, Kushagra and his wife, fashion designer and artist Reena Rathore, wanted to honor their family’s legacy by converting the ground floor into a guest house.
Architect Bhavya Gaur, founder of Bahr Studio, was the visionary who brought this dream to life. Gaur’s coherent design seamlessly integrates the old with the new by using interconnected communal spaces, repeated geometric elements and a consistent colour palette. “As an architect from Jaipur, I am heavily inspired by the city’s rich art, craft and architectural culture. This design seeks to modernise these elements without merely imitating them. I wanted to create a space that offers a glimpse into the city’s unique visual and spatial characteristics,” explains Gaur.
The old house exuded warmth, family values and shared joy, which became the cornerstones of visualising the essence of the guesthouse. Gaur incorporated fresh, new elements while evoking a sense of nostalgia – a pink facade inspired by the old city, local yellow sandstone from Jaisalmer, colourful handcrafted interior elements and bespoke furniture pieces crafted by master artisans from the city.
