Red Sox relief player takes next step in Tommy John rehabilitation

Red Sox relief player takes next step in Tommy John rehabilitation

The Boston Red Sox desperately needed reinforcements in the bullpen last month, as the two relievers they signed late in the season (Lucas Sims and Luis Garcia) didn’t produce much.

However, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, Boston is close to adding another player to the team, as Liam Hendriks is expected to begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester on Sunday. He reports that the Red Sox hope he can go a total of seven innings without a setback.

Hendriks, 35, signed a two-year, $10 million contract with Boston in the offseason, knowing he would likely not be a pitcher for most of 2023 due to his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

In his two full seasons with the Chicago White Sox, he posted a 2.66 ERA and an impressive .871 WHIP with a 13.8 K/9. Such a performance would benefit the Red Sox bullpen tremendously right now. But even if he’s not at that level, he should still be more effective than some of the other relievers Boston has used recently.
