Virginia Tech Tight End Nick Gallo on the John Mackey Award Watch List

Virginia Tech tight end Nick Gallo was named to the 2024 John Mackey Award Watch List for the second consecutive year on Friday. The John Mackey Award is given to the most outstanding tight end in college football and Nick Gallo was announced as a nominee.

Gallo last played in 2022, as his 2023 season was ended early due to a knee injury suffered in the preseason against Old Dominion. In the 2022 season, he finished with 30 catches and 256 receiving yards in 9 games for the Hokies as a sophomore two seasons ago and was the team’s third-leading receiver. Tech used Gallo frequently to block and has valuable traits your tight end needs to be successful. He fights for yards when he has the ball and is not someone who needs the ball in his hands to be effective.

Nick Gallo was also listed as a potential breakout player for the Hokies this year and head coach Brent Pry said this about him after his injury: “I’ll tell you now, you’re talking about your heart aching for someone who’s committed to coming back and wants to lead and play and better himself, better the team, and before he can even play in the first game, he has a season-ending injury. But he’s been great, great family. He’s a leader, he’s mature, he’s very valuable to what we do. When things like that happen, that’s the point. Right? It’s about Nick and what he’s going through and obviously the loss and we miss him and the impact he has on our offense as a starter and his experience and all of those things, but more than that, you feel for him.”

The semifinalists for the John Mackey Award will be announced on October 29, and the three finalists will be announced on November 26. The winner of the award will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards on December 12 on ESPN.
