NILES – The Niles and Edwardsburg cross country teams kicked off the 2024 season Friday morning at the Viking Stampede at Madeline Bertrand Park.

Reece Davis of Marshall took first place overall with a time of 16:08 and Claire Vos of Plainwell took first place in the girls’ race with a time of 20:40.

Niles’ boys team finished fourth with 96 points and the girls team finished second with 74 points. Edwardsburg’s boys team finished second with 48 points and the girls team finished fourth with 95 points. Plainwell took the girls’ and boys’ titles, but Niles’ Charlie Drew finished second in the girls’ race with a time of 21:05 and Claire DevlescHoward finished seventh with a time of 22:27. Edwardsburg’s Kennedy Kaylor (24:37) and Grace Leman (24:39) finished 15th and 16th, respectively.

In the boys’ race, three Edwardsburg runners finished in the top 10 – George Scupham (16:49) in fourth place, Maguire Johnson (16:52) in fifth place and Reed Gates (17:50) in ninth place. The Niles siblings Beau (18:17) and Ceon Kirkdoll (18:34) finished 11th and 15th, respectively.
