The de Young Museum exhibits recently discovered photos of Paul McCartney

A series of recently discovered photographs by Paul McCartney will be shown for the first time at de Young in San Francisco. The exhibition includes over 250 personal photos recorded by the famous musician during the band’s tour in the USA and England.

Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm presents a short excerpt from the band’s time, From December 1963 to February 1964while the Beatles’ success was skyrocketing and “Beatlemania” was in full swing.

In Eyes of the Storm“Recently unearthed photographs by Paul McCartney offer a rare time capsule of the world of the Beatles at the time of their extraordinary rise to fame…” said Thomas P. Campbell, director and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in a press release. “McCartney is known as one of the world’s most famous music stars, and it is a revelation to discover McCartney’s skill as a photographer, documenting everything from the band’s quieter moments and friendships to the ‘Beatlemania’ of the period.

The photos show McCartney both in front of and behind the camera. In addition to the photos, video clips and other archive material will provide further insight into the musician’s life during the three months.

The photos were only rediscovered in recent years after remaining as unprinted negatives for decades. The exhibition is organized by the National Portrait Gallery and is currently on display at the Brooklyn Museum. The photographs will make several stops before being transferred to the de Young in 2025. The de Young is the only museum in California that will be showing the exhibition, so we are lucky that the photos will be on display right here in San Francisco.

Eyes of the Storm opens on 1 March 2025 and runs until 6 July 2024 at de Young. In the meantime, you don’t have to wait to see amazing art at the iconic museum; de Young offers many great exhibitions, including American Beauty: The Osher Collection of American Art, About Place: Bay Area Artists from the Svane Giftand more.
