Dr. Jill Stein announces Butch Ware as Vice Presidential candidate

Dr. Jill Stein, Green Party presidential candidate, has selected Professor Butch Ware as her vice presidential candidate.

Stein made the announcement late Friday night, saying Ware was perfect for the job.

“His personal experiences in overcoming systemic injustice, his deep knowledge of history and popular movements, and his commitment to building a sustainable, just and peaceful world make Butch the ideal candidate,” Stein noted in a press release. “This is truly a historic platform, bringing together a Jewish woman and a Black Muslim against genocide, endless war, climate change and rampant injustice, and for an economy that works for working people, a livable future for our children, and an America and world that works for all of us.”

Stein further noted, “Ware is a lifelong activist and educator specializing in the history of empire, colonialism, genocide, and revolution.” For the past 20 years, he has taught history, African American studies, and Islamic studies.

This news comes at a time when Democrats are seriously considering undermining independent candidates.

The Democratic National Committee filed a complaint seeking to remove Stein from the Wisconsin ballot.

Under state law, the candidates the electors nominate for the Green Party convention must include state officials, legislators and judges, among others. Candidates for the state’s Congress may also participate. The complaint states that the Green Party cannot nominate a slate of candidates because the party does not have anyone eligible to serve as a nominator.

Whatever happens with the complaint could change the outcome of the election. Four of the last six presidential elections in Wisconsin have been decided by 5,700 to 23,000 votes. Stein is expected to be officially named her party’s nominee at the convention.
