Tennessee National Guard celebrates 250th anniversary

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMC) – The Tennessee National Guard is celebrating its 250th anniversary this week. Soldiers, Airmen and community members celebrated by gathering at the Joint Force Headquarters in Nashville on Friday to reflect on the organization’s history.

The first state militia was formed on August 17, 1774, to confront the Shawnee Indians in East Tennessee – 22 years before the official founding of the state.

“That moment marked the birth of the Tennessee Militia, which became today’s Tennessee National Guard,” said Major General Warner Ross. “It also marked the beginning of a tradition of volunteerism that is celebrated as the nickname of our state and is a core belief of all present here today.”

About 50 volunteer members of the Tennessee National Guard are taking part in the first deployment.

Two and a half centuries later, hundreds of soldiers in the nation’s capital reflected on the organization’s legacy, achievements and dedication.

While the participants spoke, Command Sergeant Major Dale Crockett led the ceremonial cutting of the cake.

“Celebrating 250 years of service to our state and nation is a remarkable achievement,” he said. “I am proud of what our soldiers and airmen have accomplished over the years, and that is reflected in the traditions and accomplishments they have made since the first militiamen volunteered for service in 1774.”
