Steamy air greeted visitors to the Missouri State Fair on Thursday, but that didn’t spoil the fun.

Thousands traveled across the state to Sedalia in central Missouri to enjoy rides, festivities, live music, animal shows, car races and more. The event got off to an unexpectedly spicy start at the Governor’s Ham Breakfast, when Senate candidates Josh Hawley and Lucas Kunce argued over the scheduling of debates.

The exhibition grounds were just as lively – but much quieter. Photojournalist Sophie Proe was there and captured the cheerful hustle and bustle.
