Customers report that they can once again find blankets and pillows in American Airlines First Class on night flights across the country.

These are standard amenities for premium “Transcontinental” flights such as from Los Angeles to New York, but since before the pandemic no more night flights from Seattle to Miami or from San Francisco to Philadelphia.

Customers on the Internet welcome this as “very welcome news” and “a small step in the right direction”.

American Airlines confirms to me: “We began providing blankets and pillows for domestic first class on transcontinental flights this summer.”

Sometimes I think American Airlines is its own worst enemy when it comes to marketing. When they do something positive, they don’t tell anyone. How are customers supposed to know they enjoy the product more—that it’s improved!—and be willing to spend more money on it if the airline doesn’t tell people it’s improved it?

And I worry that if very few people know they’ve invested in the product, it won’t do as much to increase sales and it will look like the investment failed – further proof that people buy on time and at the right price, so why keep investing?

So I set myself a mission: if the airline makes a great investment, I want people to know about it! Night flights are tough, and although I don’t get cold during the flight, the seats on regular domestic flights aren’t padded enough to be comfortable. I usually use the blanket as an extra seat pad or pillow.

You may not be able to make the most of a pillow as the incline is no greater than on domestic first class flights, but you can use it as a side pillow or neck roll.

In other words, everyone will use them differently, but they are convenience tools that are much easier to provide to passengers than if you bring them yourself. Nice to see!
