“Welcome back” is the motto in the school buildings and on the university campuses in Emporia.

Classes at Flint Hills Technical College began last Monday. Emporia State begins classes next Monday, and Emporia Main Street is hosting its popular Welcome Back Block Party from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Jessica Buchholz, community development coordinator for Main Street, says the event is a great way to connect students with other students, campus organizations, activities and the downtown business community.

In past years, the street fair has been held near the corner of 12th Street and Commercial. The general format will remain the same, but the event will move further south to the 600s and 70s blocks of Commercial.

Tagan Trahoon broadcasts from 17:00 to 18:30.

As Emporia State prepares for the first day of classes on Monday, some notable construction is underway during the fall semester, including initial work on the Nursing + Student Wellness Center. The new facility could be ready for students to move into in the fall 2025 semester. The space previously used by the Butcher Education Center will be used to house equipment for this construction project.

Provost Brent Thomas will appear on KVOE’s newscast at 8:05 a.m. Monday with more information about the first day of classes at ESU.
