Have you noticed the large splashes of paint that have appeared at Emory Place on North Central Street? They are part of a new mural installation, and more artwork is planned to be added.

Artists from Knoxville and beyond are completing a large-scale mural project that will soon cover more than 7,000 square feet of wall north of downtown Knoxville.

KnoxWalls is a project spearheaded by Dogwood Arts, Visit Knoxville and Lilienthal Gallery, a press release said. The Tennessee Arts Commission and ORNL Federal Credit Union also supported the project, and property owners Ilana Brodt and Johnny and Libby Harb donated the wall space.

Representatives from Dogwood Arts and Lilienthal Gallery selected which artists would complete the murals from over 90 submissions. The 13 artists selected include four Knoxville residents, as well as people from Oakland, California, Denver, Colorado and Detroit, Michigan.

As of August 15, three artists have completed their murals and three more are in progress.

The mural is part of the Art in Public Places program created by Dogwood Arts, which is also behind the murals in Strong Alley near Market Square.

Consider the Wynwood Walls district in Miami, an open-air museum for street art.

KnoxWalls will open to the public on October 4.
