A Korean all-you-can-eat barbecue restaurant opens in the South Bay

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) – Those living in the South Bay no longer have to travel to the Convoy District to enjoy Korean barbecue.

A brand new all-you-can-eat eatery called Sura Korean BBQ has officially opened its doors in Chula Vista’s Otay Ranch neighborhood. The same team behind the popular Common Theory Public House developed the hybrid concept.

The 4,500-square-foot restaurant at 1960 Optima St. has 32 tables, each equipped with a gas grill for cooking meats such as brisket, beef belly, chicken, steak, shrimp and more. The meat is delivered directly to the tables.

There are three all-you-can-eat pricing tiers: $36.99 for Classic, $44.99 for Premium, and $56.99 for Sura (which means “King’s Meal” in Korean). Each option includes access to the cold buffet with more fresh meats and sides, the hot buffet with various cooked dishes, and unlimited soda and soft serve ice cream.

Prices are more affordable for smaller eaters. Children under 36 inches eat free, while children between 36 and 42 inches can enjoy all three menu items for $12.99. Children between 43 and 56 inches receive 50% off meals.

“Our goal is to bring high-quality Korean barbecue to the South Bay and minimize the drive time to the Convoy District,” said Joon Lee, one of the concept’s creators. “Our hybrid system makes us unique: meat is brought to the table, meat is available at the buffet, and there are many other great hot and cold options. We believe there is something for everyone, and who doesn’t like ice cream?”

At Sura, each table has a two-hour time limit. Guests who finish their meal within an hour can receive a discount on their return visit.

“It’s time to feast on meat in the South Bay,” said Cris Liang, another creator of the concept. “It will be a great atmosphere watching our guests eat to their hearts’ content, as Sura will be another option for those in East Chula Vista who want to save a little at the pump instead of making the 50-mile round trip to the Convoy District.”

The restaurant opens at 4:00 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 11:30 a.m. Thursday through Sunday. Parking is available in an adjacent dirt lot and on several surrounding streets.
