Indonesia expands international connections with new routes from Jeju Air and four leading airlines

Indonesia is expanding its global reach as Jeju Air and four other major airlines open new routes, boosting international connectivity and tourism.

Five international airlines will soon start international flights to Indonesia, announced IGA Dewi Hendriyani, Head of the Communications Office at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf). The airlines that will begin operations are Jeju Air, Batik Air Malaysia, Air Asia, Starlux and China Southern Airlines.

Dewi stressed that Air Asia has already started opening several new international routes. These include Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei to Jakarta on August 2, 2024; Kota Kinabalu to Denpasar on August 9, 2024; Phuket to Denpasar on August 10, 2024 and Cairns to Denpasar on August 15, 2024.

In addition, Taiwanese airline Starlux plans to open its new route from Taipei to Jakarta on September 1, 2024.

The expansion of these international routes aims to strengthen Indonesia’s connectivity to key markets that contribute significantly to the country’s tourism, including Malaysia, Australia, China, Thailand, South Korea and Taiwan.

In related news, it was recently announced that Scoot Airline will be introducing two new destinations, Kertajati in Indonesia and Melaka in Malaysia, in addition to expanding its fleet with two new aircraft. Scoot’s CEO Leslie Thng noted that the airline has seen significant demand for Southeast Asian destinations since the launch of its Embraer E190-E2 aircraft in May 2024.

Jeju Air Co., Ltd., South Korea’s first and largest low-cost airline, is a founding member of the Value Alliance. In addition to its flight services, the company also owns a Holiday Inn Express in Seoul. The airline is named after Jeju Island.
