LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana (KPLC) – A longtime dog rescuer is asking for help for a dog in need on her 80th birthday.

Dana Frye, founder and director of LaPAW Animal Rescue in Lake Charles, has a very special wish this year.

She is using the celebration of her 80th birthday to raise money for an eight-year-old Labrador-Catahoula mix named Newman, who has suffered from hip dysplasia for years.

According to a press release from the Humane Society of Louisiana (HSLA), the femoral head in Newman’s hips had become embedded in his pelvic bone, causing excruciating pain with each step. By removing the femoral heads from each hip, Newman will now be able to experience less pain and walk more easily.

Newman was found during the Fourth of July fireworks display when a Lake Charles resident heard a dog crying under her porch. She said the dog was having trouble standing.

The resident brought the dog into the house and noticed that it could not walk on its own. She later drove the dog to Frye’s apartment to get help.

LaPAW took Newman to a veterinary clinic in Lake Charles and the estimated cost of the required surgery is nearly $2,000.

To raise the necessary funds, Dana contacted HSLA and made a special request for Newman’s 80th birthday.

“The world needs more Dana Fryes and groups like LaPAW that help many animals in need with little money,” said HSLA Director Jeff Dorson. “We appreciate and applaud Dana’s efforts to use her birthday to help an animal in need. It speaks volumes about her selflessness and example of helping others and other living creatures. We hope and pray that pet owners, business people and foundations will come together to get Newman the help he needs and deserves.”
