SHELBY COUNTY, Alabama (WBRC) – A new state-of-the-art shooting range is being built in Shelby County.
The new shooting range will be located in Columbiana, not far from the Shelby County Humane Society and near Highway 280 and I-65.
The goal is to provide people with a safe environment to shoot firearms.
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources purchased the land in 2022 with hopes of opening a state-of-the-art public shooting range there.
Crews are in the design phase, surveying the site and conducting noise and safety studies. They say completion will take about nine months.
Then they begin the construction phase, which could take about a year.
This will now be the department’s 14th shooting range in the state, which will include several unique features such as electronic and 3D targets and a public archery park – all at a low cost.
This is a fully staffed shooting range with staff to teach you how to shoot, safe shooting, and range etiquette.
Staff said this is an effort to give back to the community as gun sales have increased in recent years.
“There are a lot of people out there who have purchased these firearms, they have paid into the Pittman Robertson Fund, which is where the taxes come from that give the state the ability to build these shooting ranges. So we’re trying to give them something for their money, and so this group of people who have always been shooters and have always been in our area are really taken care of,” said Michael Weathers, chief enforcement officer for the Alabama Wildlife and Fisheries Division.
Officials said the shooting range is expected to open in late 2025 or early 2026.
