Today’s episode of KFC Radio was Feits’ 36th birthday, but if you ask me, he doesn’t look a day over 35. I put birthdays in a unique category of events that get significantly less cool and actually pretty depressing as we get older. With that in mind, it seems like a good time to go over some of the life events that get less cool as we get older.
Going to college parties
After college, you have a grace period of 1-2 years where you can still enjoy making a cameo appearance at a college party. But if you can’t get it under control after that time, you might want to look in the mirror and give yourself an open heart. Let it go, man. Once you have kids of your own and they’re in college, you’re allowed to go into Frank the Tank mode on Parents’ Weekend. It will always work.

Injuries
From ages 6 to 18, there was NOTHING cooler than going down with an injury. Flailing around town with your crutches or cast was a spectacular feeling. I once broke my arm in a soccer game (athlete) and was begging people to ask me for the cast. The tables turn here at the point where your sports career ends. You can’t go to your accounting job on Monday with a torn ACL, you end up being that guy who plays way too hard in his 30+ basketball league, which is really tough.
Birthdays
The genesis of this blog, so this needs a little more explanation. As a kid, there was no better feeling than waking up on your birthday day. It’s a day that’s all about you, running around school, bringing home cupcakes, the whole shebang. As you get older and more cynical, that aura around birthdays fades and birthdays are viewed as just one year closer to death. I’d say your last birthday in college is probably the swan song to them being a big celebration. After that, you’ll probably celebrate every weekday birthday you have in front of an Excel spreadsheet. The epitome of fun.
