Art initiative “Growing Together” changes Tulsa district

An arts program is helping to transform Tulsa’s Kendall-Whittier neighborhood.

It started earlier this year when the organization’s partners, Tulsa and Growing Together, released a community survey.

“Some of them expressed a desire for low-cost or free art workshops or art classes that are family-friendly and for all ages,” said Alexandra Munoz of Growing Together.

Local artist Juni Peraza learned about the initiative through social media.

“I thought, I’m in this area, so I’d like to be a part of it,” she added.

Peraza has lived in Kendall-Whittier her entire life and has witnessed the city’s low points.

“There are a lot more shops than I saw as a child,” she added.

This led her to want to get involved in the revitalization efforts and apply to lead a workshop on creating a zine project, that is, publishing booklets about one’s passions.

“I like seeing people get excited about the things they’re passionate about and also writing and drawing about it,” Peraza continued. “I think it’s a really cool way to get to know someone.”

The workshops brought color back to Archer Park and the art that emerged reflects this.

Liliana Antel has lived in Kendall-Whittier for a decade and has taken her son and nephews to several workshops.

She said it was a new experience that allowed them to develop a talent and share it with their community.

The artwork created in the workshops will be exhibited at Clare Michael on Thursday, August 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. The art exhibition is free and open to the public.

Munoz believes this will also open up further opportunities.

“Some of the art will hopefully travel around the neighborhood and be displayed at various businesses,” she said.

The neighborhood is also working on a mural, pending city approval, to be placed on a wall in Archer Park. The design will be unveiled at the art show Thursday night.
