Netflix’s “American Murder”: Laci Peterson tells the whole story of Amber Frey

Frey helped the police by listening in on conversations with Scott Peterson

Frey says investigators asked her if she would be willing to use a recording device while she was on the phone with Scott Peterson, and she complied. She says her “heart was pounding” and her “hands were sweating” every time she answered and recorded a call from Peterson. Her work led police to request a wiretap of Peterson’s phone as well, in hopes of recording a confession, but that confession never came.

Peterson spun a web of lies during his relationship with Frey. He told her he would be out of town at certain times and even pretended to call her from Paris on New Year’s Eve when in reality he was attending a vigil for his missing wife. “In my heart, I know you are lying shamelessly,” Frey says of that particular call. “He was not actually in Paris.”

Eventually, Peterson confessed to Frey that although he had lost his wife weeks earlier, he hadn’t actually lost her. “Scott confessed that he had lied to me and that his wife was missing,” says Frey. “I was relieved to be able to confront him about it without having to keep up the facade of our relationship. But at the same time, I hoped that by continuing these conversations, I might be able to get more out of him about what happened with Laci.”

In a later press conference, Frey spoke about her relationship with Peterson and attempted to set the record straight with a one-minute statement. “I met Scott Peterson on November 20, 2002,” she said in her first public appearance, which is featured in the documentary. “I was introduced to him. I was told he was unmarried. Scott told me he was not married. I am very sorry to Laci’s family and the pain this has caused them. And I also pray for her safe return.”

Frey soon afterward cut off contact with Peterson and later testified at his murder trial. In 2004, Scott Peterson was convicted of murdering his wife and their unborn son, Conner, although he continues to maintain his innocence. In 2020, his death sentence was overturned, but Peterson is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of Laci Peterson and her child.
