Weatherford Eagles ready for big 2024 season with new head coach and star talent

Although Weatherford begins 2024 with a new head coach, experience is the priority this season.

The Eagles have a 22-man graduating class led by defensive end CJ Nickson, who recommitted to OU and happens to be the top recruit in the state.

At 6’5″ and 220 pounds, Nickson will be a big part of the team’s success this year, literally. Nickson’s teammates say he’s not only physically strong, but also a likeable guy who leads by example.

Head coach Taylor Sossamon said his impact on the team was remarkable. “It’s hard to put into words. He’s a great athlete, but he’s also a great person. A person of strong character. You never have to wonder what he’s doing off the field – he always does the right thing. He comes from a great family. You can’t say enough good things about him.”

Sossamon has been part of Weatherford’s staff since 2017, but this will be his first season as head coach and he has high hopes for the program under his leadership.

“Hopefully it looks like a bunch of crazy people trying to handle their responsibilities with a great attitude and hopefully great character,” Sossamon said.

Veteran wide receiver and defensive back Cy Scammahorn said, “Coach Soss is the guy. We love Coach Soss and always have. I have a feeling we’re going to have a great season. I can’t wait.”

Nickson adds: “I think he’s going to be more energetic. He’s definitely getting a lot more out of us than he has in the past.”

Weatherford hopes to improve significantly from its 6-5 season last season. The 2024 season begins on September 6 against Kingfisher.
