Pop-up modern and contemporary art gallery MUST presents its most notable exhibition yet in collaboration with HALO: “Botanical Origins,” featuring two widely acclaimed local artists, painter Susan Singleton and ceramicist Annie Sparks-Burke. The mixed media art installation will open with an evening event free to the public at 6pm on Friday, August 16. Wine and artwork will be available for purchase. On-site will be The Kitchen, offering farm-to-table Pan-Asian fare.

The exhibition profoundly reflects on the origins of seeds and illustrates the interconnectedness within our natural world and galaxy. The exhibition explores botanical energy and embraces the beauty in the imperfection of the human hand. The exhibition presents Singleton and Sparks-Burke in a conceptually driven, highly symbolic, evocative, calming and mysterious story that is rich in the immensity of universal elements and invites the viewer to surrender to an ethereal sophistication. The exhibition creatively extols “Wabi-Sabi” as a means of elevating the reality around us all – transcending it and calling it home. It presents itself as a juxtaposition of the raw, the curious, the seemingly simple, the inspiring and the moving. The exhibition leaves a lasting sense of romance and a renewed appreciation for what is.

Susan Singleton’s inspiration comes from nature with its complex simplicity, balance, texture, scale and light. Using handmade paper and paint, she creates her artwork as layered architectural surfaces, each piece a unique portal that captures time, light and air. Her large-scale Ziggurats and other artworks have been included in artist collaborations at the Smithsonian Institute and have graced the lobbies and walls of some of the finest hotels, museums, galleries and private homes around the world.

Annie Sparks-Burke is a ceramicist and sculptor. Her sculptures are delicate, poetic and frozen in time, inviting the viewer to look closer and examine every bend, twist and structure, conveying Annie’s perspective on the natural world.

“When I was a child, my favorite way to spend an afternoon was in the garden or on a log in the flood. During long days of unstructured play, I developed a curiosity and powers of observation for nature. Working with clay is sensual, the mineral smells and textures connect me to my first experiences with my surroundings. This is my moving meditation. Through my artistic activity, I find my resilience and curiosity for life.”

Annie’s ceramics are all hand-formed, coiled or thrown on the potter’s wheel. Each piece is unique. Annie’s work was recently featured in the 1,000 Vases exhibition in Paris, France.
