“The first drink is on us,” says Flora-Bama about the anniversary party

It’s not every day that free drinks are handed out at the famous Flora-Bama, but it will be the case on Sunday as the venue celebrates its 60th anniversary.

According to the Flora-Bama Lounge, Package & Oyster Bar, the anniversary celebration will take place on Sunday, August 18th, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The celebration will include live music, birthday cake and a free drink ticket for guests 21 and older.

The Flora-Bama was built in 1964 by Ted Tampary and his sons. Joe Gilchrist bought it in 1978 and developed it into a live music venue: Gilchrist, who died in 2022, became legendary for making the Flora-Bama a magnet for talented songwriters and creating one of its signature events, the Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival.

Pat MClellan became a partner in 1978. John McInnis and Cameron Price became co-owners in 2009, and since then the legendary roadhouse has spawned several sister businesses, including the Flora-Bama Yacht Club and the Ole River Grill.

Scheduled entertainers for Sunday’s festivities include the Lucky Doggs, Jason Justice Duo, JT McCafferty Band, Kyle Brady, Kaleb King, Jessie Wilson & Tory Grace, Al & Cathy and Dew Pendleton.
