Big Ten Conference and Chicago Cubs partner for The Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series

ROSEMONT, Illinois. — The Big Ten Conference and the Chicago Cubs announced today that they plan to host two college hockey doubleheaders at Wrigley Field in January 2025. The event will be known as The Frozen Frontier: Big Ten Hockey Series.

Tony Petitti, Commissioner of the Big Ten Conference, Crane Kenney, President of the Chicago Cubs Business Division, and Chicago Blackhawks President of Business Operations Jaime Faulkner spoke at a press conference at Wrigley Field on Thursday and was joined by Chicago Cubs Chief Commercial Officer Colin Faulkner, NHL Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer Steve Mayer, and Chicago Blackhawks team ambassador and University of Wisconsin graduate Chris Chelios. The event was broadcast live on the Big Ten Network and moderated by Rick Pizzo.

The Frozen Confines will feature three Big Ten men’s hockey games and one Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) women’s game at Wrigley Field the weekend of January 3-4, 2025. Big Ten Network will broadcast all four games live. The order of the games is still to be determined, with start times set for January 3 at 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. CT and January 4 at 4:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. CT. The matchups are:

Friday, January 3, 2025:
Penn State vs. Notre Dame, BTN
Ohio State vs. Michigan, BTN

Saturday, January 4, 2025:
Ohio State vs. Wisconsin (WCHA), BTN
Wisconsin vs Michigan State, BTN

Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin were each ranked in the national top 20 polls last season, with four of the teams finishing in the top 10. Since 2022, all six schools have appeared in the NCAA Tournament, with Michigan reaching the Frozen Fours three times in a row.

On the women’s side, Ohio State and Wisconsin have combined to win the last five national championships and have met in the last two NCAA championship games.

The college hockey weekend follows the Discover NHL Winter Classic® between the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks on December 31, 2024, the second NHL Winter Classic to be played at Wrigley Field.
