Happy birthday, York County!

York County’s 275th anniversary is just around the corner, and a weekend of festivities is planned to mark the occasion.

York County was officially established on August 19, 1749, after previously being part of Lancaster County. According to a press release from History Made Here York County Pennsylvania, York County is now the eighth-largest county in the state, with a population of over 456,000.

Here you can find all the events celebrating the founding of York County:

Saturday

A street festival will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at WellSpan Park, 5 Brooks Robinson Plaza, and at Investment Real Estate, 320 N. George St.

York Revolution will then play at home against the Hagerstown Boxcars at WellSpan Park. The game will start at 6:30 p.m. and the gates will open at 5:30 p.m., according to a press release.

In addition to the baseball game, fans can enjoy a community parade, special performances, fireworks and singing “Happy Birthday” with cake.

Sunday

A conversation with local historian Jim McClure and radio host Gary Sutton will take place at 4 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St.

According to a press release, the event will provide a comprehensive look at York County’s history, as well as little-known facts and defining moments that have shaped York County’s identity.

Also on Sunday, creatively inclined individuals can visit the Elks Lodge and participate in a community mural project.

The painting project is scheduled from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 223 N. George St.

Local artist Ophelia Chambliss will oversee this community mural project and invites everyone in the community to participate.

Monday

The milestones will be recognized Monday at the York County Administrative Center, 28 E. Market St.

The milestones include:

  • 275th Anniversary of York (1749–2024)
  • America’s upcoming 250th anniversary (1776-2026)
  • Upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Articles of Confederation (1777–2027)

As part of this recognition, the York County anniversary ceremony will include the reading of the charter and the unveiling of the design for the 275th commemorative plaque.

You can also ring bells throughout York County on Monday.

As part of the celebrations, people are encouraged to take part in a symbolic ceremonial bell ringing on Monday at noon. Bells played a crucial role in communication 275 years ago, serving to convey important messages, call people together to meetings and mark significant events, a press release said.

York County authorities invite churches, organizations, groups and families with bells to participate in a synchronized bell ringing.

“Let’s fill the air with the joyful sound of bells ringing in unison across the country!” the press release states. “Encourage your friends, family and neighbors to join in. The more bells, the merrier the celebration! Let’s make this moment one to remember! Spread the word!”
