Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams of Michigan State Football on season goals and position at running back

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams joined the Michigan State Spartans through the transfer portal this spring. Lynch-Adams was very successful at UMass last season, rushing for over 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns.

His journey didn’t start there, though. He began his career at Rutgers before transferring. He told Spartans running back coach Keith Bhonapha the reason: immaturity. That honesty and self-awareness earned him the respect of Bhonapha, who said the conversation made him happy to have a player like Lynch-Adams in his running back room.

Speaking of the running back room, Lynch-Adams joins a group of running backs led by Nate Carter, who arrived as a transfer last season and led the Spartans in rushing, the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal season. Lynch-Adams and Carter are both prototypical Bhonapha running backs, as the coach himself pointed out to reporters on Thursday.

Bhonapha wants physical runners who are explosive. Nimble. They don’t have to be as elusive as Barry Sanders, but they have to be able to change lanes as a balanced runner when needed. Good hands. Blocking. A key point for Bhonapha: fall forward.

When Lynch-Adams addressed the media on Thursday, he explained what he noticed about his colleagues in the backfield.

“I think we’re pretty explosive,” Lynch-Adams said. “The camaraderie, I think we have a good rapport with all of us. Even with Coach (Keith Bhonapha). (Bhonapha) has done a great job as far as getting us settled in, teaching us things we need to know and getting us ready for practice every day. So I think we have a good rapport in the room and like I always say, iron sharpens iron. So I think we’re going to continue to get better because we continue to push each other every day.”

Lynch-Adams is a 1,000-yard rusher joining a team that already has a presumed feature back and will likely prioritize a vertical passing game, so how exactly will he measure up this season in terms of success and failure?

“I don’t want to get too into it. Honestly, I’m just here to win games,” Lynch-Adams said. “I’m here to win games and pack the stadium. I’m ready to do it. I’m just looking forward to it.”
