Today, commercial aircraft mostly look the same. A cylindrical fuselage, wing-mounted engines and swept-back wings define the modern airliner. While the specs may differ, today’s passenger aircraft have a conventional appearance. JetZero aims to change that with its blended-wing fuselage design, including two rear-mounted engines and more efficient performance. Not only does it look cool, it’s also more environmentally friendly – no wonder Alaska Airlines has invested in the company’s future.

The airline made the investment through its Alaska Star Ventures (ASV) division, which aims to chart a path for the future of aviation. ASV aims to identify technologies that will help the company achieve its goal of carbon neutrality by 2040.

The JetZero BWB aircraft has a wing and fuselage fused into a single unit, significantly reducing drag and is expected to reduce fuel consumption by 50%. This results in lower operating costs and fewer CO2 emissions. The aircraft’s spacious interior also allows for unique seating arrangements and a quieter flight.

Diana Birkett Rakow, senior vice president of public affairs and sustainability at Alaska Airlines, said, “At Alaska, we are always looking for innovations and ways to shape the future of air travel for our guests, employees and the industry. We are proud to invest in JetZero’s development of this innovative next-generation aircraft, which brings a significant advancement in fuel efficiency. We and JetZero share the vision of more sustainable aviation and are excited to work with them to shape that future.”
