John Daly is a man of many talents.
He also made a strong impression on Bryson DeChambeau by rewarding the 2024 US Open winner with numerous gifts and insider golf tips in a hilarious video.
“I’m going to teach Bryson how to win the British Open,” said a smoking and barefoot Daly. “Just let the wind be your friend – because that’s what Jack Nicklaus told me.”
Daly clearly won the 1995 Open Championship.
Almost 30 years later, it looks completely different and has changed a lot.
But in many ways, the 58-year-old golfer with five PGA Tour victories is still the same spontaneous Daly that fans around the world love.
While chatting with DeChambeau, one of the world’s hottest golfers – and rising YouTube star – laughed nonstop and took in everything that makes Daly’s personality so unique.
Then he happily accepted a gift that only Daly could give – cigars.
“I just want to say I love you, son,” Daly told DeChambeau as he handed them to him. “You’re not allowed to smoke cigars, but you can smoke handmade Dominican ones – bring them to your friends.”
“Wow, that’s great,” DeChambeau replied.
The latest episode of Break 50 featured two of the sport’s most individual golfers facing off.
DeChambeau is best known for his bombastic shots, for integrating the modern world into a traditional game, and for becoming one of the new faces of golf.
Daly once smoked 21 cigarettes and drank 12 cans of Coke at a Tour event without drinking any water.
In the video with DeChambeau, Daly wore a hat that said “HICK” on the front.
“I will drink because I know you will carry me,” Daly said to his friend.
“Perfect,” said DeChambeau.
It was a dream match for new school golf fans – and it could be the basis for a reality TV series.
“I drink chocolate milk,” said DeChambeau. “We are happy.”
Every line Daly said was golf comedy.
DeChambeau couldn’t stop smiling and seemed to acknowledge that before Bryson rocked the tour, there was Daly, breaking norms and challenging conventions.
“You play the long game,” Daly said. “I play the short game because I’m old and fat and have a great future ahead of me, son.”
Daly has earned more than $10 million on the PGA Tour.
DeChambeau, who is part of the LIV Tour, has nine PGA victories and more than $34 million in career PGA earnings.
“John Daly is a G,” tweeted one fan.
“Big John was always the GOAT,” wrote a second fan.
