In a heartwarming celebration, the community of Effingham, Illinois, gathered on August 6, 2023, to mark the 100th birthday of veteran George Mette.

Mr. Mette served as a Navy Coast Guardsman in World War II and has lived an extraordinary life of service, entrepreneurship and dedication to his community.

Over the course of his 100-year life, Mr. Mette raised seven children and operated a thriving lumber business, which his son still operates today. An active member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Mr. Mette attended every home basketball game for the St. Anthony’s High School team, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his community.

It was a true honor and pleasure for the staff of the Effingham CBOC to present Mr. Mette with a letter from Denis McDonough, Minister of Veterans Affairs, as well as a service coin to honor and thank him for his service to our country all those years ago.

The Effingham community is impressed and inspired by Mr. Mette’s remarkable life of service, entrepreneurship, and deep devotion to family and faith. This centennial celebration is a testament to the steadfast spirit of our nation’s veterans and a reminder of the profound impact they have had on our lives.
