Mad genius Tom Carpenter delivers the Maximus 4V for those of us with less space in our studios!
Tonight there is news from the middle of England: the brilliant Tom Carpenter of Analogue Solutions has announced a stripped down Maximus in the form of the Maximus 4V. Similar to Colossus, Tom has taken four voices away from the brilliant Maximus and released a four voice version.
The Analogue Solutions Maximus 4V
Much like the Oberheim, which was clearly an inspiration for Tom, he has reduced the original Maximus by 50%, giving us a four-voice version that still sounds fantastically impressive, but reduces the physical footprint, or to be more precise, cuts the height in half!
If you don’t remember the original Maximus, it was an eight-voice polyphonic synth in the mold of the mighty Oberheim 8VS. Like its inspiration, the Maximus had eight independent voice modules, each with its own pair of oscillators, three filters, EGs, sequencers, VCA, sub-oscillator, noise generator, and BBD-style echo.
A master unit housed several VCOs, an eight-channel stereo mixer, spring reverb, MIDI, and a MIDI-to-CV converter. All of this was housed in a wood and metal chassis with numerous patching options. An optional keyboard with 61 weighted keys with velocity and aftertouch and a touch controller bar with 64 pads was available.
Maximus 4V – A Maximus for all of us
Tom has now removed four of the voices to deliver the 4V variant of the Maximus, providing a more affordable entry into the world of the Maximus. The synth caused quite a stir when it made its debut at SynthFest UK in October 2023. It was immediately compared to the Oberheim 8VS, and for good reason, but it takes the concept a little further.
Yes, it’s very similar to multiple SEMs in one box, but each of the Analogue Solutions voices has a lot more to offer, such as an independent sequencer per voice and also a BBD-style echo. But just like the 8VS, each Maximus is hand-built to order and sounds epic when played.
The Analogue Solutions Maximus 4V is available to order now direct from Analogue Solutions for £9,900. The optional AS400 keyboard is available for £1,900. Of course, if you prefer eight voices, you can order the Maximus for £22,500. All prices exclude packing, postage and VAT where applicable.
