Disney’s animated hit from 2009 Kiss the frog gets a sequel in the form of a Disney+ original series titled Tiana. Based on the fairy tale of the same name, Kiss the frog follows an aspiring restaurant owner named Tiana who embarks on a whirlwind bayou adventure after meeting a prince who was turned into a frog. Known for its hand-drawn aesthetic and catchy New Orleans-inspired score, Kiss the frog felt like the last glimpse of the Disney Renaissance before the studio turned exclusively to CGI animation.
Hopes for a sequel have been high since the film’s debut, but a possible Kiss the frog franchise over the years. However, Disney has now produced a television series that will act as a direct sequel and will follow Tiana after she gets her happy ending and her restaurant. Although details surrounding Tiana are still rare, it offers Disney a chance to capture a bit more of the classic magic that Kiss the frog and potentially introduce Tiana to a new audience that wasn’t even born when the film premiered.

From what Sherri said at D23, it is clear that
Tiana
will not be a remake of the film, but exact details of the plot are still unknown.
Although the project has been known for some time, the latest update contains new story details for Tiana. Revealed during the “Tiana’s World” event at Disney’s D23 Fan Expo 2024. TianaSenior writer and director Joyce Sherri has offered some hints about what to expect from the Disney+ exclusive show.We haven’t even seen Maldonia yet!“, said Sherri, referring to the fictional kingdom whose princess Tiana became at the end of the film. Also Sherri announced a more character-based storyand said:And she will discover that life, just like everything else in your dreams, can evolve.”

Well, Tiana’s journey is far from over. Of all the things she’s going through right now, I’m most excited to show Tiana learning that the world is a lot bigger than she thought. That there are a lot more magical things in the world than she thought, and learning what it means to be a leader. Not just as the leader of her restaurant, but she’s now the princess of all of Maldonia, we haven’t even seen Maldonia yet! And what that means for her, the impact she has on the community around her, and how she maintains her Tiana-ness, the person she is, despite all these new expectations of her life.
And with the help of all her friends and the people who love her and care about her and support her, I’m really excited for her to discover these things and see what the next chapter of her life is. It took more than 10 years for a sequel Kiss the frog will be announced soon, and Tiana was unveiled in 2020. It would be another year before more updates surfaced, and the first image was released in 2021. More years passed, and the series was pushed back from a planned 2023 release to a 2024 release, and finally simply labeled as “coming soon.” In August 2024, Disney revealed story details at its D23 Fan Expo event, proving that the project was still underway. However, the release date is unknown.

Although Tiana has been in development for almost five years, the promising project still has a great sales factor. The cast of Tiana is largely unformed, but Tiana’s original voice actress, Anika Noni Rose, has been hired to reprise her role as a Disney princess with a heart of gold and a love of cooking. Other characters from Kiss the frog is expected to return even though no one else has officially signed on yet. Prince Naveen seems to be the most logical return, but it is uncertain whether Bruno Campos will voice again.

As in most classic Disney princess films, Kiss the frog saw Tiana get everything she wanted, from her handsome new husband to her beautiful restaurant. That leaves Tiana in an interesting place, as the story is not entirely clear. However, the teasers from director Joyce Sherri at the D23 event in 2024 suggest that Tiana will travel to her new kingdom of Maldonia and once again embark on a journey of self-discovery.
Sherri also hinted at another magical adventure, and while she probably won’t be turned back into an amphibian, Tiana will likely have to contend with powerful forces beyond her control. What those might be is still uncertain, though it’s highly unlikely that the sequel series will repeat the film’s plot (or bring back the villainous Dr. Facilier). Whatever happens in Tiana It will be a character-driven narrative that attempts to capture some of the classic Disney magic that Kiss the frog.
