Ruth Marie Weems Green died on August 10, 2024 in Solomons, MD after a full and fulfilling life. Ruth was born on April 16, 1935 in St. Leonard, MD to James Edward and Marie Anne (Wood) Weems. She lived in St. Leonard most of her life, with a ten-year interruption in sunny Florida. She attended Prince Frederick Elementary and graduated from Calvert High School in 1953, the same year she married Norman Guinn Green.
Ruth and Norman spent the early years of their marriage in Calvert County and Arlington, VA before returning to Ruth’s hometown where they raised their six children. Ruth’s days were filled with caring for the family, but she also enjoyed working outside the home. Her varied jobs included: telephone operator for AT&T in Washington, DC, postal worker in Orlando, FL, and receptionist at Calvert Internal Medicine in Prince Frederick, MD. But the job she held the longest and enjoyed the most was working alongside her parents for twenty years at their St. Leonard company, Weems Texaco. Ruth said it was wonderful to work close to her children and spend quality time with her parents each day.
Always ready to experience new things, she visited all 50 states, the Caribbean, and Europe, where one of her favorite trips was to Greece. Travel was just one of Ruth’s passions, genealogical research was another. She spent many years completing her family tree, tracing her ancestors back to their arrival in Calvert County, MD in the early 1700s and then to Scotland in the year 1000. Like many of those ancestors, she was a lifelong member of Christ Church in Port Republic, MD, serving as a Sunday school teacher as well as an aide at the church’s annual tournament dinner. Ruth was very proud of the Weems family’s deep roots in Calvert County. Her thousands of hours of meticulous research created a legacy that her descendants will cherish.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, her parents, her grandson (Samuel Ray Gross), her brothers (Robert Edward Weems, Sr., Claude Ronald Weems), and her nephew (Robert Edward Weems, Jr.).
She is survived by her children, Arlie Green (Lisa Logan) of Myrtle Beach, SC; Lenoir Green (Sammie Quesenberry) of St. Leonard, MD; Faith Moore (Dale) of Prince Frederick, MD; Hope Guinn (Shawn) of Toano, VA; Kimberley Wilson (Jeffrey) of Woodbridge, VA; and Gayle Green (Lorre Fritchy) of Lawrence, MA.
Ruth will also be loved and missed by her 16 grandchildren: April, Jill, Jennifer, Alexis, Kathleen, Dustin, Michael, Lenna, Jared, Brandyn, Andrew, Ashleigh, Matthew, Julia, Jacqueline and Camden; as well as her 25 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her brother Richard Dale Weems (Becky) of St. Leonard, MD; her sister-in-law Shirley T. Weems of Port Republic, MD; and her lifelong friends Dorothy Greene and Nancy Zinn of St.
Leonard, MD, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private funeral service was held on August 14, 2024. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to your favorite charity.
