United Way of Greater Lorain County and Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital announced the United We Sweat Cleveland Clinic Caregiver Series, a monthly series aimed at providing free health and wellness education in downtown Lorain.

Classes are held every third Friday of the month from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at United Way, 642 Broadway in Lorain.

The series will run for the remainder of the year, with each session featuring a new topic and a new expert speaker, according to a press release.

The Aug. 16 session is titled “Food as Medicine” and will be presented by Laura Horner, a cardiology nurse and case manager at Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital, the press release said.

The presentation will explore the benefits of a heart-healthy diet, with a focus on the Mediterranean diet.

Participants received practical tips for healthy eating, such as how to eat the rainbow, shop at the edge of the supermarket and how to eat healthily despite a small budget, the press release said.

It is possible to participate in person or virtually.

Pre-registration is recommended at bit.ly/4fqfiZM or by calling 440-277-6530.

Following the presentation at 5 p.m. there will be a free yoga class.

“I am proud to expand our collaboration with Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital to offer the expertise of their caregivers in a unique way to benefit the community,” said Ryan Aroney, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Lorain County, in the press release. “United We Sweat offers a variety of classes to meet the diverse needs of our community, and this series will expand on those offerings and be a fun and informative introduction to our free Friday yoga class.”

“United We Sweat” is an initiative of the United Way of Greater Lorain County that aims to provide access to high-quality physical activity and wellness opportunities for all people in Lorain County, regardless of location, age or ability level, the press release states.

“We believe that promoting an active lifestyle and preventing chronic disease starts at the community level,” said Dr. Rebecca Starck, vice president and chief medical officer of Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital, in the press release. “Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital is proud to partner with United We Sweat and United Way to care for our community and bring the expertise of our caregivers and important health and wellness resources to Lorain County.”
