The evolution of her red carpet style over the years, from Elie Saab’s 2002 Oscar dress to Versace and more

Halle Berry has long been admired for her work in front of and behind the camera. The filmmaker and Oscar winner’s career spans more than three decades and includes unforgettable performances on the big and small screen. But Berry’s red carpet style has also become synonymous with her star status and personality. She often wears elaborate pieces from well-known designers such as Atelier Versace, Elie Saab and more.

To celebrate Berry’s 58th birthday on Wednesday, WWD looks back at some of her standout red carpet looks from over the years.

In 2002, Berry wore one of the most famous Oscar dresses of all time. On the night she became the first African-American woman to win the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Berry wore an ornate gown courtesy of Elie Saab. The dress featured a dark red mesh skirt and an intricately embroidered bodice.

2006

At the premiere of her film X-Men 3: The Last Stand in 2006, Berry wore a gray Reem Acra gown with a shimmering plunging bodice that was embellished with delicate beading throughout. The skirt of the gown was made of a flowing fabric with soft folds.

2011

At the 2011 Oscars, Berry wore a strapless Marchesa gown with a gathered skirt and flowing train. The dress had a figure-hugging silhouette and was embellished all over with pearls.

2017

In 2017, Berry attended the 2017 Academy Awards wearing an Atelier Versace gown. The dress featured a metallic trim with a flowing train and contrasting black and silver hues. The bodice of the sleeveless dress also featured an asymmetrical neckline with one strap.

In 2020, Berry attended the screening of her directorial debut, Bruised, at AFI Fest. The actress dressed chic, wearing a metallic silver and black look courtesy of Pamella Roland. Sheer panels were also part of the ensemble.

She wore a look that featured lots of sheer elements and a variety of lace details. The actress’ La Perla look featured sheer long sleeves and a sheer skirt with black lace details.
