Report: Chinese Big Tech companies will make major strides in AI use in social, educational and office areas

Artificial Intelligence (AI) A new report says the adoption will benefit users in three main areas – social and entertainment, education, and office collaboration. It also reveals where the country’s tech giants could make the most success in their race to integrate generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into nearly every aspect of their businesses.
In their efforts to capitalize on the rapid development of large language models (LLMs) – the technology behind GenAI products such as ChatGPT – Technology companies have significantly expanded their use of AI-powered features in a variety of service offerings, mobile internet market consultancy QuestMobile said in a report released Tuesday.
Large technology companies such as the Internet search giant baiduWeChat operator Tencent HoldingsTikTok owner ByteDance and e-commerce giant Alibaba Group HoldingOwner of the South China Morning Post, could benefit most from integrating AI into products that already have a large user base, the report said.

Alibaba’s fintech subsidiary Ant group has one of the most popular AI applications with its “intelligent financial assistant” called Zhixiaobao, which offers help with wealth management and insurance. According to QuestMobile, the assistant had nearly 60 million users at the end of June.

Baidu has integrated its Ernie LLM into a number of services, including its search engine and online document sharing service Wenku. Similar to Google with Gemini, Baidu search now displays AI-generated answers to user queries at the top of results. Wenku can create slide decks based on simple text prompts. These were the most popular AI features in China, at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, according to a ranking by aicpb.com, which tracks the popularity of AI services.

The versatility of LLMs has driven the current wave of AI adoption, according to the QuestMobile report. LLMs are trained on massive amounts of data, allowing them to generate sophisticated results from simple language queries. When combined with other GenAI technologies, they can create text, image, audio and video responses, often with surprising results.

GenAI is also known to produce false information, or in China’s case, politically sensitive information. The country requires government approval to publicly release LLMs.

According to the lists published by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), a total of 188 models have been approved for release so far. They have been used for apps and services in 20 major areas, including emotional support, artistic creation, online shopping and financial services. Almost 600 million people in China use these LLMs, the head of the CAC said recently.

According to the QuestMobile report, GenAI is also having an impact on hardware, as smartphone and PC vendors are turning to AI to increase their revenue.

According to market consultancy Canalys, AI-enabled phones – typically those that can run AI models on-device using processors designed specifically for the task – are expected to account for 54 percent of the global smartphone market by 2028, and 80 percent of all PCs priced above $800 will be AI-enabled by that year.
