American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez – Watch the first trailer

The Ryan Murphy-verse is getting bigger. While FX’s upcoming American sports history differs from its predecessor, American crime historythe first part of the series could really belong to both shows – just like The People VOJ Simpson could before that. American Sports History: Aaron Hernandez “traces the rise and fall of NFL superstar Aaron Hernandez and explores the diverse aspects of his identity, his family, his career, his suicide and their legacy in sports and American culture,” says the season’s logline.

The series – an adaptation of the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc. out of The Boston Globe and Wondery – released its first full-length trailer today. With the same exciting style we expect from this family of shows, the clip shows a completely different side of The Hunger Games – The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes^ “Josh Rivera”.

Rivera plays Hernandez, the NFL tight end who committed suicide in his cell days after being acquitted of a double murder in 2017. In 2015, Hernandez was found guilty of murdering semi-professional player Odin Lloyd, who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancée at the time. During the trial, he was charged with another double murder and later acquitted. After his death, Hernandez was certainly to have suffered from the worst form of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) ever seen in a person of that young age, at least at that time.

No further seasons have been announced yet, but the overall goal of American sports history is to be “a scripted anthology miniseries that focuses on a prominent event involving a sports figure and re-examines it through the prism of today’s world, telling that story from multiple perspectives.” In 2021, FX also announced that a separate series with the title is planned American love storya scripted anthology series that “tells compelling true love stories that captured worldwide attention,” but there hasn’t been much news about that particular project since then.

American Sports History: Aaron Hernandez also stars Patrick Schwarzenegger, Tammy Blanchard, Lindsay Mendez, Scot Ruggles, Jerry Levine and others. The 10-episode limited series premieres on September 17 on FX and Hulu.
