Since its release on Netflix, many have wondered if Room is a true story.
Director: Lenny Abrahamson, Room (not to be confused with Tommy Wisaeu’s infamous project, The room from 2003) is a haunting story about survival and perseverance in a seemingly hopeless situation.
The film was nominated for a total of four Oscars, and lead actress Brie Larson won the Oscar for Best Actress. Larson also won numerous other awards for her performance, including a Golden Globe and a BAFTA.
Is “Room” based on real life?
Room tells the harrowing story of a young woman named Joy, played by Captain MarvelBrie Larson, who was held captive for seven years by an evildoer named Old Nick. The man raped Joy repeatedly and as a result of one of these attacks, she had a son, Jack.
Eventually, the boy manages to escape from captivity and attract outside attention by having Joy trick Jack into faking his own death. This results in Joy and Jack being released, while the exact opposite happens to Old Nick after his arrest.
The film was recently made available for streaming on Netflix, which means Room has attracted more attention than usual. Naturally, this has raised questions among some as to whether or not the events of the film happened in real life.
However, Room is not based on a true story, but on a 2010 novel of the same name by Emma Donoghue. Donoghue’s book was very popular and landed on the New York Times bestseller list in the year of its publication.
But RoomThe story of is at least inspired by the real-world Fritzl case. Elisabeth Fritzl is an Austrian woman who was imprisoned and enslaved by her own father for over 20 years.
Ultimately, Fritzl managed to escape under similar circumstances to those in RoomHer father was tried and is serving a life sentence.
