Halide delights photo purists with new anti-AI processing mode

Halide, the popular camera app for the iPhone, is running head-on against photography trends. While companies like Apple and Google are focusing on artificial intelligence and computational photography, Halide has developed a new processing mode for photo purists. It’s called Process Zero.

Ben Sandofsky writes for the lux Blogs:

Process Zero is a new mode in Halide that skips the iPhone’s default image processing system. It produces photos with more detail and gives the photographer more control over lighting and exposure. This isn’t a photo filter – it actually develops photos at the sensor’s raw data level.

Just like film, Process Zero photos come with (digital) negatives, which gives incredible control over changing exposure after the fact. Just like film, they are grainy. They work best in daylight or mixed lighting, not night shots. Thankfully, unlike film, you don’t need chemicals to develop these negatives. We give you a dial.

In our modern age, the simple question “What is a photo?” can be difficult to answer. If you use Apple Intelligence to remove unwanted objects from an image, is the image no longer a photo? What if you use the Pixel 9’s new feature to add someone who isn’t actually in the shot to a shot?

For those who want a simpler approach with the minimal processing possible for a phone photo, Process Zero is an intriguing new option.

I recommend reading the full blog post at: lux Introduction to the feature as it provides extensive details and example photos.

Process Zero is now available in version update 2.15 for Halide. You can download Halide from the App Store.
