John Mulaney talks about Super Cao Nguyen and the Vietnamese-Oklahoma accent

Thanks to a guest mention on “Late Night with Seth Myers,” Oklahoma City’s local dining options regained national recognition.

Emmy Award-winning actor, author and comedian John Mulaney, in a conversation with Myers, mentioned Oklahoma City’s Super Cao Nguyen Market, 2668 N Military Ave.

Mulaney, who recently married Oklahoma-born actress Olivia Munn, spoke about his wife’s family and how he spent time with them. In particular, Mulaney highlighted interactions with the family of his new mother-in-law, “Mrs. Kim.” Munn’s mother, Mrs. Kim, who was in the audience at the time, is a Vietnamese woman of Chinese descent who immigrated to Oklahoma City after the Vietnam War.

“Marrying into a great Vietnamese family is one of the most beautiful things I have ever done,” Mulaney said.

He also talked about how members of Munn’s family have a very specific “Vietnamese-Oklahoma accent” before talking about the experience of visiting Asian markets, joking that at a certain age you think you’ve seen every fruit. But the 41-year-old actor said when he visited an Asian supermarket for the first time at 39, he realized he was wrong.

“There are supermarkets like H-Mart and Super Cao Nguyen in Oklahoma City — Vietnamese Market, have you been there? Super Cao Nguyen? It’s in Oklahoma City,” Mulaney said. “They have fruits — jackfruit and durian — that look like avatar fruits, they’re all new fruits.”

Ba Luong, one of the brothers who own and operate Super Cao Nguyen, called the naming “surprising to say the least.”

“We are extremely grateful to have been part of this growing community for so many years,” added Luong.

Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt also posted a short clip of the segment on X, formerly Twitter, with the caption, “Yes, John, that was all of us.”
