Amtrak train from Miami to New York in a bedroom: photo tour

  • I spent 30 hours on an Amtrak train from Miami to New York City in October 2021.
  • For $1,000, I stayed in a bedroom that was about the size of a king-size bed and had a full bathroom.
  • The private room was more comfortable than any other overnight train I’ve booked in the US.

If possible, I prefer to travel by train, even if that means traveling at night.

Not only is rail travel more sustainable than driving or flying, it also gives me unparalleled views of the world, with landscapes that change every second. And being stuck on the train for a long time forces me to sit down and do nothing, which isn’t often important in my daily life.

It all started in October 2021 when I took two 30-hour Amtrak rides between Miami and NYC. I stayed in a roomette on my trip to Miami and booked a bedroom for the trip home.

I then took two rail trips through Europe in 2022 and 2023, spending a total of 65 hours on four night trains between Berlin, Vienna, Paris and Venice, on ÖBB Nightjet trains with sleeping compartments and the luxurious Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.

My luxury overnight ride was, of course, the most comfortable, as it cost $8,000 more than any other sleeper train I’ve taken. But of all the other rides, Amtrak’s bedroom was by far the best accommodation in 2021.
