Mom wonders if it’s “too early” to decorate her house for Halloween

When is it appropriate to start decorating your house for fall and Halloween? Does the air need to be crisp? Does the summer season need to be completely over, or do you consider the start of school for your kids to be the official “end of summer”? It’s still over a month until the official start of fall – September 22nd – but who wants to wait until then?

A mom wants to know if she’s being hasty in her desire to put up Halloween decorations in her house, and now she’s asking her TikTok followers for their opinion.

Side note: Yes, I know everyone can do whatever they want with decorating and interior design in their home! This woman just wanted to get some other opinions and they gave them to her!

“When do you decorate for Halloween? And when is it too early?” asks mom and TikTok content creator Leslie Soldano.

“For example, if you see a neighbor now, I’m not talking about outside decorations, it’s too early. I’m talking about inside decorations. For example, if you see in a window that someone has Halloween decorations in their house and they’re not bothering anyone, when is that possible? When is that somewhat acceptable?”

Several TikTok users joined in the conversation, with some even admitting that their fall and Halloween decorations are already up!

“My fall decorations are now up in my house. 😁,” one user admitted.

Another said: “Early September inside and late September outside. It’s only October! Need more time, I don’t give a shit 💀😂.”

“On Monday we’ll be decorating inside because the kids are going back to school and summer is over. On September 1st we’ll be decorating outside 🖤,” wrote one mother.

“My kids went back to school on August 7th and I started decorating the next day because when school starts again, it’s technically fall,” another admitted.

Another user noted that she is waiting until after Labor Day weekend, which some consider a farewell to summer vacation.

“Labor Day weekend!! It’s that time. And it’s never too early! Doing what makes me happy!” she wrote.

Another joked: “When Starbucks discontinues fall drinks.”

Accordingly Houses & GardensThere are some important factors to consider when decorating for Halloween and fall.

First, wait until the weather gets cooler (if that’s possible where you live!).

“One of the best times to start decorating for fall is when the weather cools down for a longer period,” H&G’The 4000’s editor-in-chief Lucy Searle wrote:

“After the intense heat of summer, cooler weather is often the first harbinger of the fall season and can help make fall decor, such as fall decor in the living room, feel even cozier and more inviting.

She also suggests waiting until October to redesign the decor.

“October is the perfect time to start decorating your home with fall decor or Halloween decorating ideas and get ready for the holidays. From decorating with pumpkins to making sure you have plenty of the best candles scattered around your home, Halloween decorating and fall decorating always go hand in hand,” Searle explained.

Searle also suggests simply joining in with the neighborhood hustle and bustle, keeping an eye on what others are doing, and waiting until you see others start planting their porches with fall leaves.

And finally, maybe you can put up some fall decorations early and then once October arrives, add a touch of Halloween here and there. That way you’ll still have the fall spirit, but you shouldn’t feel like you’re getting ahead of yourself!
