The premiere of the five-part series will take place on September 19th.
Description:
How did one woman shake up Japan? The Queen of Villains premieres September 19 and reveals the story of Dump Matsumoto, the most fearsome heel during the golden age of women’s professional wrestling in Japan. Over five episodes, the series examines the events that led to her rise decades ago.
In the 1970s and 1980s, female pro wrestling tag teams such as the Beauty Pair (Jackie Sato and Maki Ueda) and the Crush Gals (Chigusa Nagayo and Lioness Asuka) became national icons. They captivated Japan not only through their matches, but also through their singing and dancing in the ring. On the other side was Dump Matsumoto, the arch-rival of the Crush Gals. She made the whole of Japan her enemy and caused chaos in and out of the ring. But once upon a time, young Dump Matsumoto was told she was too nice to be a villain. What events made her one of the most disliked figures in Japanese wrestling history?
A talented cast selected through auditions brings these legendary wrestlers to life:
Multi-talented comedian Yuriyan Retriever plays Dump Matsumoto.
Erika Karata (“Namibia Desert”) plays Chigusa Nagayo, who starts out as an unsuccessful wrestling apprentice but eventually rises to stardom.
Ayame Goriki (Watashi ga Ore no Jinsei?!) portrays lioness Asuka, who is known as the most athletic and technically skilled wrestler among her peers.
The renowned Osamu Suzuki developed, wrote and produced the series. After hearing Matsumoto talk about the era of women’s professional wrestling on his show, Suzuki was inspired to turn her story into a series and wrote the script himself. Kazuya Shiraishi (The Devil’s Path, The Blood of Wolves, Lesson in Murder) serves as supervising director, while Chigusa Nagayo himself led the physical training of the actors and directed the wrestling scenes.
Follow these women’s rise to fame and the lessons their journeys continue to teach us today. The Queen of Villains premieres worldwide on September 19, exclusively on Netflix.
