This year’s Kurultaj, a tribal assembly of the Hunnic-Turkic peoples, opened in parliament on Friday. Representatives from 27 nations took part.
Sándor Lezsák, deputy speaker of parliament, said the event was “a great European celebration that represents and renews the millennia-old people’s diplomacy of the East”.
“Kurultaj has not only a past but also a vision for the future; it has long been a common holiday for young followers of tradition and for young families,” said Lezsák. “The feeling of kinship is a common national currency that will also foster economic, social, cultural and sporting ties,” he added.
Kubanychbek Omuraliev, Secretary General of the Organization of Turkic States, stressed Kurultaj as an opportunity for the Hunnic-Turkic peoples to celebrate a common past and traditions and to promote economic and cultural relations.
He pointed out that Hungary has observer status in the OTS and said that the Hungarian EU Presidency could “reinforce the Turkish World to Europe”.
Further programmes of the event will take place until Sunday in Bugac in southeastern Hungary.
