China Airlines has sold two Boeing 747-400 freighters to South Korean operator Asiana Airlines.

The deal, brokered by Aviation Management Solutions, is worth more than 69.6 billion won ($51 million), according to stock exchange filings. Asiana says it is buying the jets to replace its fleet of aging cargo planes and “improve punctuality.”

The two aircraft carry MSNs 30768 and 30765, according to Aviation Management Solutions. Cirium fleet data shows that MSN30768 was registered as N111VL and was formerly known as B-18711. It was delivered to the Taiwanese operator in 2002.

According to China Airlines, the transaction for this cargo aircraft is valued at no more than $29 million, with an expected profit of no more than $2.2 million.

MSN30765 was formerly known as B-18708 and was re-registered as N132VL. China Airlines operated the freighter between 2001 and 2024, according to fleet data. A document filed in May said the transaction price was no more than $25 million, with a profit of around $4.3 million expected.

Both freighters are powered by CF6 engines from GE Aerospace and are currently stored in Victorville, USA.

The acquisition comes as Asiana prepares to divest its cargo business ahead of its merger with Korean Air.

On August 7, Korean announced that it had signed an “agreement in principle for the sale of the company” with Air Incheon to acquire the cargo business.
