José Andrés says he would “love” to eat the worm from “Dune”

While Dune – The Desert Planet: Part 2 caused a lot of excitement – including the adult popcorn bucketJosé Andrés talks about an unexpected cooking opportunity inspired by the film.

In a viral TikTok from Bon Appétit, celebrity chef José Andrés expressed disappointment that the Arrakis never came up with the idea of grilling the sandworms, saying he would personally “love” to try them.

“I understand it’s a semi-sacred thing, but it also kills people,” he said. “A little steak on the grill… Imagine that! It must taste so good.”

“Shai-Hulud on the grill? Apparently Chef @José Andrés was wondering during a segment of #Dune2 why no one was cutting a fillet off a sandworm to feed the masses on Arrakis,” reads the caption of the video.

Of course, fans were quick to share their thoughts in the comments section. “I would love to eat that worm, that is literally the most Spanish thing I have ever heard,” one user wrote. “I can only imagine a nice little grilled portobello worm burger,” another person added.

“This is the best comment on Dune yet,” a third person chimed in.

Although André’s desire for worms seems a bit outlandish, he’s not the first to think of it. In fact, there’s an entire Reddit page dedicated to the topic. In the thread titled “Are sandworms edible?”, users discussed eating shai-hulud. “Come to think of it, they (basically) eat sand and plankton,” the original author wrote.

“Maybe they’re like puffer fish that you have to cook just right or they’ll poison you?” one commenter speculated, while another added: “I get the impression that sandworms are extremely dry, almost like machines, because any water is a threat to them, right? Even moisture in the air. It would be like eating rocks.”

“They’re almost impossible to kill, so I think that’s a moot point. Leto II explains how his worm body can withstand a hit from a laser rifle (apparently the most powerful weapon),” wrote a third user. “I’d bet you could eat a worm the same way you would eat a beached whale – if you found it quickly after it died. But I can’t imagine a worm dying in a suitable place.”

It’s your turn, José.
