Dodgers rookie River Ryan faces Tommy John surgery

The Los Angeles Dodgers have lost another starting pitcher due to the injury list.

On Tuesday, the Dodgers announced that rookie right-hander River Ryan will undergo Tommy John surgery. The 25-year-old injured his elbow in his fourth career start and underwent an MRI on Saturday. He is the latest in a long line of Dodger starters to go on the IL this season.

Ryan was a bright spot for the Dodgers during his brief tenure. The former two-way player went 1-0 with a 1.33 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 18 strikeouts against nine walks in 20 1/3 innings pitched. Now he will miss the rest of this season and likely all of 2025 while he recovers.

The Dodgers have had to spend several starters on the injured list this season. Walker Buehler and Yoshinobu Yamamoto are currently working on their return from injury, while Tyler Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw have also been sidelined. Dustin May was out for the rest of the season in July with a torn esophagus, and Tony Gonsolin has already missed the season due to Tommy John surgery.

In addition to injuries to their regular players, the Dodgers are currently missing relievers Brusdar Graterol, Ryan Brasier and Blake Treinen.

The Dodgers are still in first place in the National League West and brought in Jack Flaherty to bolster their rotation at the trade deadline. Plus, Buehler is expected back this week while Yamamoto has moved to bullpen sessions, so all is not lost even if Ryan’s season is lost.
