Vertical acquires major rights for “A New York Story” and unveils trailer

EXCLUSIVE: Vertical has the North American as well as the UK and Irish rights for A New York storyabout a New Yorker who is torn between the luxury life in uptown and the bohemian world downtown, where she finds new love outside her social circle.

The romantic drama is the second film by siblings Sophia and Fiona Robert, who work under the name The Robert Sisters. They co-wrote the screenplay and Fiona Robert directed it.

Fiona Robert also plays Annabel, a young woman who is in danger of being expelled from her insular New York clique, led by her best friend Virginia (Sophia Robert), when she falls in love with the charming photographer Theo, played by Paul Karmiryan (Veronica Mars).

Coping with the sudden loss of her father, she is torn between the comfortable prosperity of her upper class and the vibrant ambitions of the inner-city artists.

Other cast members include Annabella Sciorra (Tulsa King), Logan Miller (Escape room) and Oscar-nominated director Whit Stillman (Metropolitan).

The film with the previous title A view of the world from Fifth Avenuehad its world premiere at Geena Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival in June. Vertical has set a US release date of September 6.

Other actors include Richard Ellis (I do not agree with this), Noelle Miller (Spare me), Francesca Root-Dodson (Consequence), Dan Thompson (Three women), Elaine Hendrix (dynasty) and Carolyn Farina (The Age of Innocence).

“By utilizing a wide range of New York locations and carefully assembling a talented ensemble, Fiona and Sophia wrote a love letter to the city while making a universal statement about the paths to happiness that can only be found beyond our comfort zones,” said Tony Piantedosi, SVP of Acquisitions at Vertical.

Whit Stillman, who plays the father of Annabel’s fiancé, noted: “I was grateful to the lovely Robert sisters for giving me my first role in an American film – and I hope they get that under control in the editing.”

The Robert Sisters produced together with Drea Clark (The last time you had fun). The film follows her feature film debut, The Country Clubwhich was released in June 2023 by Good Deed Entertainment.

Piantedosi negotiated the deal on behalf of Vertical, while Glen Reynolds of Circus Road Films negotiated on behalf of the Robert Sisters.

Before the release, Vertical released the trailer.
