Rookie John Morgan III returns to Patriots injured reserve for 2024

Rookie John Morgan III returns to Patriots injured reserve for 2024

The player, who was released from the New England Patriots’ 90-man roster on Monday, will remain in the squad.

According to NFL Transaction Wire, rookie defensive end John Morgan III returned to the injured list after clearing waivers. Aside from becoming a free agent through an injury settlement, his 2024 contract will expire in mid-August.

Morgan, 24, was held from practice and released on injury duty earlier this week. The 6-foot-1, 255-pound player arrived at Gillette Stadium in May as part of the organization’s undrafted class.

Morgan, wearing number 54, made his debut at fullback in the season opener against the Carolina Panthers. He forced quarterback Jack Plummer out of the field in the third quarter and recorded a sack. He finished the night with 19 defensive sacks and 10 special teams appearances.

Morgan transferred from the University of Pittsburgh to the University of Arkansas in 2023 and spent six years between the ACC and SEC, appearing in 64 games and totaling 89 tackles and 16 sacks. With the Razorbacks last fall, the redshirt senior was involved in 15 tackles, two sacks, his third career pass defense and his fourth career forced fumble.

Morgan is the third player to land on New England’s injured list since the start of training camp, following center Jake Andrews and offensive tackle Tyrone Wheatley Jr., the latter of whom was also activated as injured before being unclaimed.

The Philadelphia Eagles visited Foxborough for a joint practice on Tuesday and will return for kickoff on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.
