The Big E launches fourth annual job fair

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) — The countdown has officially begun as the Big E is exactly one month away, and on Tuesday, people flocked to the fairgrounds hoping to snag a job at this year’s event.

Dozens of ordinary citizens did not hesitate to help out at this year’s Big E.

“I just thought it would be something fun and interesting to do during the 17 days of the fair,” said Dean Berry.

Dean Berry of Agawam was one of dozens who stopped by the Storrowton Village Fairgrounds to find a job at the Big E’s fourth annual job fair.

Good news: He was one of the first hired. He will be working an information booth during the event. The Springfield International Charter School administrator told Western Mass News he wanted to try something new.

“You get a different perspective on the logistics of such a large operation,” explained Berry. “As a visitor to the trade show, you only get a small glimpse of what is actually happening, you are behind the curtain, so to speak.”

People just had to show up and either fill out a paper application or sign up if they had already applied online. Departments seeking positions included agriculture, marketing and public safety. There were also several openings for giant slide attendants.

Plus retail, for which Chicopee friends Julien Martinez and Taneisha Rivera were hired.

“When I saw the ads they had posted for a job fair, I decided to just call Julien and give it a try,” Rivera noted.

“It was a great feeling to be hired right away,” said Martinez. “The energy was very good. I really liked the atmosphere today. I’m really enjoying Big E so far and I’m looking forward to what’s to come in this new position.”

Exactly one month before tens of thousands of people arrive, new hires on Tuesday said they are ready to go and told us what they are most looking forward to.

“It’s a new experience and we’ll see what happens,” Rivera added.

“Just getting to know people and different types of people that you don’t normally come into contact with and saying hello to people,” Berry said. “Being that happy person who tries to help you.”

If you weren’t at the job fair on Tuesday, that’s no problem, because you can still apply for a job online.
