Cherry Valley Elementary hosts back-to-school block party for families

CHERRY VALLEY, Ill. (WIFR) – Cherry Valley Elementary School has been hosting street festivals all summer long, and the final event will be on August 13th.

These meetings provide families with an opportunity to meet Cherry Valley Elementary staff, build relationships, play games, and provide learning materials.

“They enjoy playing the games with the teachers. They feel more comfortable and unconventional, not so school-oriented, and it’s just nice to interact with the teachers,” says Deanna Gordon, mother of two elementary school students.

Students received free backpacks donated by Collins Aerospace and City First Church.

There were also free snacks provided by Kona Ice and community agencies such as Rockford Fire and Police Departments, Rosecrance Behavioral Health, Calvary Christian Church, Boys and Girls Club, RPS 205 and more. Rock River Jeeps was the DJ for the event.

“All of our community partners were very excited to come along. We’re doing this for the fifth year now and each year we engage more community partners and those who have been involved in previous years are really excited to come back and join us again,” says Carolyn Timm, principal at Cherry Valley Elementary School. “We really want to focus on building connections with our families, nurturing relationships and letting them know that we are here to support them with their needs and that requires a school-family connection.”
