Teacher sparks debate after voicing her opinion on birthday cupcakes at school

A kindergarten teacher has caused an uproar online after expressing her “unpopular opinion” about sending her child to school with birthday cupcakes.

Spending a birthday at school isn’t ideal for kids, but indulging in something sweet with classmates can make up for it. While frosted cupcakes from the store are a typical snack for classroom birthdays, one elementary school teacher and mother of four prefers to serve a different dessert – and opinions are divided.

TikTok user KBcrayons (@kbcrayons) recently shared a video of herself standing in a supermarket aisle holding a box of various cupcakes. “All right, parents. For your child’s birthday, I like to celebrate birthdays in my classroom,” she said in a video posted to her account on August 5. “I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but please do not bring cupcakes.”

According to the educator, she finds crumbs in her classroom after making cupcakes and has to clean the whipped cream off the floor for days. “They make a huge mess and the kids honestly don’t like eating them,” she explained. “The frosting is everywhere and the kids don’t know what to do.”

Instead, the teacher suggested sugar cookies because the children seem to love them, especially with sprinkles.

“Donuts are really great too,” she continued, adding that the small donuts are better. KB also admitted that ice cream cones and sprinkles are a great substitute for cupcakes. She said her students really enjoyed the cold, creamy treat and it didn’t make a mess. Finally, KB encouraged parents to give their child Little Debbie cakes or brownies to take to class.

“These are really simple snacks that you can bring to your child and his class that won’t make as much of a mess,” the teacher announced. “Just do it.”

Although KB is an experienced school birthday party host, her TikTok viewers and other parents objected to her suggestions, arguing that cupcakes were less messy than ice cream.

“I don’t understand how ice cream can make less mess than cupcakes?” wrote one TikTok user, while another added, “As a teacher, the kids don’t care if they eat and we don’t care if we clean them up. Keep on making the cupcakes because I want one.”

A third commented: “Ice cream is way messier than cupcakes. I bring my kids their cupcakes and I’ve never had a kid not eat their cupcake when I brought it.”

Other viewers and teachers agreed that cupcakes do indeed require more cleanup. “As a teacher, I agree that cupcakes are a big mess and the kids always scrape off the frosting and usually leave them half-eaten because they’re too sweet,” one woman said. “Cookies are the best choice.”

“Mini cupcakes. Best of both worlds. Much easier to eat, less messy, still fun,” suggested another viewer.
