Alex Cora reveals how he was ‘surprised’ by Trevor Story

When Trevor Story suffered a serious shoulder injury in early April, many believed the star shortstop would miss the rest of the Red Sox season.

It remains to be seen whether Story will return to Boston’s lineup in 2024, but at least that possibility exists, largely due to the two-time All-Star’s quick recovery and rehab work that coach Alex Cora did not expect.

“He caught me off guard,” Cora told reporters, according to The Boston Globe. “We started talking and he said, ‘I’m doing this, I’m doing that. I’m going to hit the field today and there’s a chance I’ll be ready.'”

Story’s latest step in the right direction came on Monday when the 31-year-old took batting practice and caught ground balls at shortstop at Fenway Park before the Red Sox’s series opener against the Texas Rangers. Story “felt good” after the workout and was particularly encouraged by the power of his bat despite minimal effort.

The ninth-year pro still has a lot of work to do before he can potentially return to Boston’s starting lineup. But Cora “really believes” Story will be a part of the equation this season, so don’t be surprised if the latter joins the club’s fight for a playoff spot.
